SHE/FEMALE LEADERSHIP
I'm okay - you're okay.
During COVID-19 recognition has been given to country female leaders at the way they have handled the global pandemic. This recognition has not been so affirming for their male counterparts.
Companies with women in senior leadership roles are more profitable.
Recent research (Hampton-Alexander Report 2021) has found that women are now represented on all Boards of the top UK listed companies and the numbers of women has risen from 682 (October 2015) to 1,026 (January 2021). Whilst this is a significant increase, 34.3% of Board members are women, this research is limited to the FTSE350 and recognises that in many businesses there is only one woman represented on the Board and most often they do not hold the highest executive roles. This Report also reviewed the number of women who were positioned as senior leaders, or part of the executive teams and here the number was reduced to 29.4%.
We are moving in the right direction - but there is still work to be done.
Whilst statistically proven companies are enhanced by having women in leadership roles, what is also proven is the challenge they face balancing work, career, family, ambition, themselves and their teams. All of these challenges can be rewarding but also demanding.
Much recognition is given to women who are successfully achieving this balancing act. However, little recognition is given to the unconscious bias that still exists. The glass ceiling is very much alive today, the environment can be dysfunctional, ego driven, diminishing and cause paralysis in thought and action. How do we recognise our differentiated parts and create linkage in order to be part of the whole system.
“To me, leadership is not about necessarily being the loudest in the room, but instead being the bridge, or the thing that is missing in the discussion and trying to build a consensus from there.”
Jacinda Arden, Prime Minister of New Zealand.
